Question: Why is my pump running too hot and cutting off? Answer If there is not enough power going to the pump the effect may be the pump running hot or cutting off. Make sure all the wires are up to code requirements and manufacture recommendations. The pump has a thermal overload which shuts off the pump if it gets too hot. Once it cools down it will restart itself Sometimes during a heat wave, there is so much power being used in your region that your pump may not be getting the necessary power needed to perform. To confirm whether or not this is the case, restart the pump when the weather cools. Question: Why is my pump noisy? Answer Since there is a lot of water flowing through the pump, noise will occur. Sometimes the noise is caused by vibrations on the concrete slab that your pump rests on. If this is the case then you can place a piece of carpet underneath the pump to absorb the vibrations. The bearings may be worn out, to replace them take the pump to a motor repair shop to fix it. Also make sure the water level is correct. Question: How do I save some money on my electric costs from my pool? Answer An energy efficient pump as well as improved filtration can cut your energy costs up to 15 percent. Question: Why are bubbles coming into my pool? Answer The strainer cover may be loose or crack or you may just need to replace the gasket. Your water level could be low causing your pump to suck in air with the water. The weir (the flapper piece in your skimmer) may be stuck in the up position causing the water to mix with air. A leak in the plumbing may also cause air bubbles in your pool. Question: Why is my pump not creating the same pressure that it usually does? Answer This may be caused by the filter being clogged up. If you have a cartridge filter, you may have to soak the cartridge in a filter cleaner over night to help unclog it. For a sand or a DE filter you may just need to back wash the filter. Another reason that the pump is running at a lower pressure is due to the impeller being clogged. Question: Why will my pump not prime? Answer You may have a suction leak if there is not enough water in the strainer housing. You can have a leak at any joint especially at the first fitting that is screwed into the strainer housing. The strainer cover may be loose or an o-ring under the strainer housing cover may be worn. You may have clogged suction piping, which is caused by items that get sucked through the skimmer into the piping, usually lodging at any turn in the piping. Sometimes when the pump starts, a small stone or debris by-passes the pump basket it will break the impeller. The pump may be located above the pool water level or may be too far from the pool, requiring longer periods to prime. The ideal situation is to locate the pump at or just slightly above water level, 8 feet maximum, and as close to the pool as possible, approximately 10 - 20 feet maximum. Question: I accidentally ran my pump without water, what are some of the possible consequences of this? Answer Running your pump dry will usually cause it to burn out. |
