Guide Name: Pool Opening Guide
- Remove the leaves and water from the cover. The best way to remove the leaves is by using a sump pump.
- After the cover is off the pool clean it, let it dry, and store it. You can add Baby Powder to the cover to help prevent mildew buildup while it is being stored away.
- Hook up your filter and pump and reconnect your hoses to the pool. Never run your pump without water, by doing this you risk burning out the pump.
- Remove all the dirt and leaves from the skimmers, filter pumps and drains to prevent clogging
- Before starting the filter and pump, make sure that your water level is high enough. A good rule of thumb is to fill the pool half way up the skimmer. To get a precise level consult your pool manual.
- After you water level is high enough turn on your filter and pump to circulate the water. Once again make sure you do not run the pump without water.
- After circulating your water for 3-4 hours, test the water. The two chemicals that are the most important to get balance first are the chlorine and the PH.
- After you balance your chemicals, let the filter and the pump run for 3-4 hours and then test the water. If all the chemicals are balance you can now go swimming.
Helpful Tips:
- If you are having trouble with green water, it could be one of two problems metals or algae. Have your water tested for metals such as copper, iron, etc, if that’s the problem you would need to use metal out. If algae is the problem, you would need to add the proper algaecide to your pool
- Test your calcium weekly. If your calcium is low, the water will take it from the walls of your pool or from your heater elements which will cost you a lot in the near future. We do have a five part test kit that tests for calcium as well as chlorine and ph. This test kit can be found under accessories and it is called Aquachek 5.
- Closing your pool late and opening the pool early will help prevent algae. When the pool is closed the water is not circulating which means if the temperature is warm algae may form under the cover.
By doing this there is less of a chance of there being warm days with the pool covered thus preventing algae.
