Guide Name: Heater Buying Guide There are 2 types of heaters, Millivolt and Electronic ignition. A Millivolt heater’s pilot light is constantly on. With the Electronic ignition heater, the pilot light is on only when the heater is on. The advantage with going with a Millivolt heater is that they do not require any special electric work and they cost less money than an electronic ignition heater. The advantages with going with an Electronic Ignition heater is that they come with a digital display and also the pilot light will not blow out. Sizing the heater is not too difficult. The following math formulas and chart will help you determine which heater is the one for you. Round pools: radius (1/2 diameter) x radius x 3.14 for example to find the square feet of a 24 foot pool: 12 x 12 x 3.14=452.16 square feet. Rectangular pools: length x width for example to find the square feet of a 18x36 pool: 18 x 36=648 square feet. Oval pools: 1/2 length x 1/2 width x 3.14 for example to find the square feet of a 15x30 oval pool: 7.5 x 15 x 3.14=353.25 square feet. Kidney-shaped pools: length x width x 0.75 for example to find the square feet of a 20x40 kidney shape pool: 20 x 40 x 0 .75= 600.
You can go with a larger pool heater if you would like rapid heating. If you go with a smaller heater than what is recommended, it will struggle to heat your pool to your satisfaction. It is also recommended to use a solar cover with a heater to help keep the heat in at night. When you have steam rising from your pool at night, that is the water evaporating which is the biggest cause of your pool cooling down. A solar cover will help prevent this and also will reduce chemicals from evaporating at night as well. If you live in an elevation that is above 2500 feet you will need to go with a “High Altitude Heater.” The reason for this is that the air is thinner in higher elevations. |
